Word Up

WordPress blogware is taking over my life.

It’s a good thing, really. Natural Family Online has been on a daily format using WordPress for what would previously have been several monthly issues now. (NFO Publisher) Gina (Ritter) and I are still plugging away adding features and moving the hundreds and hundreds of archived articles from the “old” NFO site on a daily basis.

Then there’s the blog … As I write this today (pausing frequently to drink in the morning sun coming through the fiery fall leaves outside my window), we’re still prepping our behind-the-scenes view of NFO. It’s been great fun to “shop” for a hip, fresh template, sort through mounds of tantalizing tidbits of news and consider the delicious possibilities of posting what we really think about some of these products and practices we write about at NFO.

And the WordPress action doesn’t stop there! Tucked into odd moments of the day (and night!), I’ve been toiling offline to bring WordPress to APConnect!, the non-profit web site I run for natural-minded families in the Dallas/Fort Worth (Texas) area. The site began a handful of years ago as a humble discussion forum for an AP playgroup, and we now reach thousands upon thousands of local and not-so-local attachment parenting families. It’s all run on volunteer power, from the web hosting to the management. We’re working behind the scenes to update all the listings (take a look at those homeschooling group listings — ugh, that’s a lot of contacts to confirm!) and move everything into — yes, you guessed it, a fresh, new WordPress format.

Feels great to be a part of seeing what used to be considered “crunchy granola” slipping into the mainstream. NFO continues to position itself squarely in the “midstream,” bringing readers natural resources without edging into the alternative fringe and without making anybody feel berated about their choices. (Well, we feel pretty strongly about the importance of breastfeeding — but we always support moms who truly can’t breastfeed with articles like our piece for healthy formula feeding.) Working together, we can slowly help make the world a greener, more natural, peaceful place.
